Interview Tips
Before the interview:
- Do your homework on the company and the job opportunity. Research the responsibilities, work environment, and the education and skills required. This shows motivation and interest, and will give you a better idea of the position and the type of candidate the company is seeking. You can learn about TransPerfect at www.transperfect.com.
- Rehearse your interview with a friend. Find some example interview questions and practice exactly how you are going to answer. The more thoroughly you rehearse, the less nervous you’ll be during the “real thing”.
- Dress “one level above” the company dress code. Remember, moderation is key. Flashy colors or patterns, oversized jewelry, and dramatic makeup should be avoided.
- Make sure you bring extra copies of your resume and business cards, as well as paper on which to take notes during the interview.
- Always arrive 15 minutes early. This not only allows for unexpected delays, but once you arrive, you’ll have some time to compose yourself before the interview.
- Duck into the restroom before you go into the interview for some last minute touch-ups. Many people neglect this step, but that sweaty, frenzied, “I just sprinted ten blocks to get here on time” look is not going to do you any favors in the interview.
During the interview:
- Maintain a friendly, pleasant demeanor. Be gracious and respectful to everyone you meet, from the receptionist to the interviewer to everyone in between. If asked to complete an application, do so cheerfully.
- Enter with a firm handshake, good eye contact, and good posture. Most employers will make a decision within the first thirty seconds of the interview, so a good first impression is crucial.
- Avoid fidgeting and keep nervous habits in check (pen clicking, pencil tapping, foot swinging, knuckle cracking, etc.). Never smoke, chew gum or drink coffee.
- Concrete examples are better than generalizations, so have stories prepared that highlight your strengths. Avoid one-word answers, but don’t ramble either.
- The interviewer will always ask if you have any questions. Use this as an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of the company and your enthusiasm for the job.
- At the end of the interview, if you are still interested in the position, make sure you let the interviewer know of your interest and ask what the next step will be.
After the interview:
Follow up with a thank you note. Be gracious and make sure to reiterate your interest in the position.
